If you spend time on DH bikes you will instantly feel at home on Niner’s WFO 9, except that the WFO is likely several pounds lighter than your DH setup. This bike has changed how a lot of riders view long-travel 29ers. Shorter chain stays, slacker head tube angle, shorter head tube, shorter top tube, lower BB height and a lower standover announce that this bike is ready to get it on. How does it do it?
First off, it’s a 29er. The big wheels bring the kind of speed through the chop and stability in the air from which any rider will benefit. These wheels stay out of the holes on techy lines, allowing you to get away with 6” of travel in serious clenching moments that just wouldn’t be fun on a trail bike. The long wheelbase puts you in charge of where the bike goes, so you can float down your favorite trail and wonder when they made it easier. They didn’t.
The WFO features Niner’s patented CVA suspension, which delivers 150mm of fully-active travel with superb compliance and damping via a custom-tuned RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 shock. The result is a faster, smoother ride up and down the trail with serious control on the way down. Combine this design with Niner’s signature air-formed aluminum tubing, and you have a platform that delivers industry-leading ride characteristics and class-blurring performance.
Niner’s WFO 9 2-Star delivers you the tools of your trade without your having to trade your soul in the process. To complement the CVA-harnessed 150mm of rear travel, you’ll be driving a RockShox Pike RC fork’s 160mm of travel through whatever jagged ruts and scattered baby heads you may encounter without batting an eye. The WFO’s Niner Alloy wheels are double-tough to keep your tenacious Maxxis Ardent tires circular, which is the best shape for tearing down trails, launching gaps, and sticking landings. To get you up to speed and keep you there, SRAM’s GX1 drivetrain provides a broad gear range in a simple, 1 x 11-speed package that holds a chain tight and shifts when you say, not randomly when you hit the rough stuff. And, you’ll thank your stars for all the extra traction you have when you actuate the SRAM DB5 brakes, which would gladly throw you over the bars if they didn’t modulate so smoothly. Niner made sure comfort and control go hand-in-hand, outfitting the WFO with solid Niner touchpoints and cockpit components, along with a KS Dropzone R dropper post so that the perfect position is at a the flick of a switch, whether you’re working your way up or careening back down.
